37 Years of Gold

The long skeletal-like laser-cut mild steel sculpture entitled, 37 Years of Gold, which runs the length of Turbine Square’s South Boiler House mirrors the erratic rise and fall of the gold price since 1970.   The silhouetted figures which ‘inhabit’ the edge of the sculpture have been derived from numerous images of many South Africans from various periods.  The sculpture which appears to be precariously supported by a series of poles is indicative of how our lives and histories are propped up by South Africa’s mineral wealth.
